Vintage Silverplate Insulated Carafe - "Sterling Hotel System"
.
The history of Hotel Sterling began with the construction of the building on the corner of Market and River Streets in Wilkes-Barre, PA in 1897. It was built by Walter Sterling, at the site of the Wilkes-Barre Music Hall. The hotel was the city's first Neo-Classical Revival building, and featured a grand, two story marble-finished lobby with a skylight.
In 1922, a 17 story hotel called the Plaza Tower was built right next door, becoming the tallest building in the city and providing a good deal of competition. Both the Sterling and the 175 foot tall Plaza Tower building were purchased by Andrew Sordoni in 1936, and were connected to form the Sterling Hotel System. In 1998 after suffering decades of decline, the hotel closed its doors forever.
Produced exclusively for the Sterling Hotel System in 1940 by Reed and Barton Silversmiths, this rare Silverplated Insulated Carafe was once used in the banquet halls and for room-service in the hotel. With a lovely patina, it beautifully captures the golden age of the grand hotel in America. Measures 7 1/2" high, 4 1/2" diameter across base and 6 1/2" handle to spout. Holds 20 oz. One-of-a-kind and subject to prior sale. In good vintage condition, bearing gentle signs of age, the worst being a couple small spots of corrosion under the lid on the inside rim of the pot.
